Depthing Guage (Dec. 2025)

In order to correctly mesh gears you need a depthing guage.

I couldn't find one with a large enouh capacity for Bar Billiards Timer Clock gears so I set about making one.

I looked at several designs others had done and copied the same principles.

I modelled up a design and produced the dimensioned drawings first.

The hinge springs are made from bulldog clips.

The finished item looks just like the cad model.

 

When you have a Wire EDM machine in the workshop you might as well use it to cut the profile. I could have machined it on the mill but setting up on the EDM is much simpler which is surprising. 30 minutes later and it was cut cleanly in 1/4" brass.
