Powder Coating Oven (Feb 2020)

I started my powder coating experience with a small desktop oven about 18"x14"x14" which was great for small parts. It was also relatively cheap.

The trouble is once you've been spoilt with the ease, finish and durability of the powder coating you'll want to coat every project, and I soon needed something bigger.

I looked at many ovens availabe on the internet but the cheapest started at £600+ with shipping extra, and for the size I've made it would be over £1000.

So I started my oven project by looking at what others had done and quickly determined I'd make one.

The frame is constructed from U-Track and stud, and the outer is covered with galvanised 0.6mm steel sheet.

The limiting size factor was the size of the sheet steel.

The sheets were 1250mm x 2500mm. So to maximise the sheet I settled on an outside oven height of 1250mm a depth of 650mm and a width of 850mm. This was 4 sheets of steel. The depth could have been deeper but I wanted to make sure the oven didn't stick out into the room much more than a standard work bench.

With the struts being 50mm wide I'd end up with and internal size of 1150mm x 600mm x 750mm (HxDxW). I'd lose a bit of height with the heating element and fan but still big enough.

The way the door is constructed it can be removed and an extra section could be put in place to increase the depth, but this is for a later date if I find I need the extra capacity.
